Essaouira Overview

What to see in Essaouira
With the exception of the modern breakwater to the south, the whole harbour dates from the time when it was first made in the 18th century. The single harbour basin is proteted by a projecting ledge on the Atlantic side, which is fortified with a strong, high wall, the Sqala du Port, and a massive tower. Opposite is the old, fairly wide quay where fishing boatsunload their catch (mosty sardines, but also rays, cat sharks, lobster, shrimp, etc.)and sell part of in directly.Stands on the harbour sell fried fish asfinger food. The harbour area is sealed off in the north by the Porte de la Marine gate erected in 1769.
The medina begins behind the gate, where Place Moulay el Hassan, the tourist haunt per excellence, extends along the Atlantic coast.
